Gulf Human Rights Association (GHR) is a non-profit, nonpartisan international human rights organization based in London, and has branches in the Arabian Gulf States (AGS) as it is a member of the network of Council of Gulf International Relations (COGIR). GHR is independent and is funded by contributions from foundations in Europe and North America that support human rights activity worldwide, and by private individuals in Israel and abroad. GHR promotes respect for human rights in (AGS) through a variety of means. We maintain an extensive communication with (AGS) authorities to ensure that individual cases are addressed, and to encourage a rethinking of policies that are out of step with Islamic values and international legal obligations.

Gulf Day of Human Rights

To achieve its international commitment and to promote the culture of Human rights in (AGS), GHR has launched (Gulf Day of Human Rights) to remember, work and celebrate annually the concepts and values of Human rights in the (AGS) society.

GHR condemns Iraqi secret religious prisons
GHR calls on the Iraqi authorities to stop arbitrary detention, torture and executions and take radical action to reform the law enforcement and justice system in Iraq. In a letter directed to Mr. Gorge Bush, UN Secretary General and president of European Commission to raise the awareness of the innocent Iraqi civilians who are facing un human situation in some secret religious prisons, GHR assured that some Iraqi authorities have detained a broad range of people who dared to exercise peacefully their rights to freedom of expression or association and sentenced some to long prison terms for subversion under what they call it "sweeping national security provisions", and in just a few months, the some Iraqi authorities have turned the clock backwards and created a new generation of prisoners of conscience.

GHR urges GCC authorities to amend any terror bill to bring it in line with human rights law GHR urged Gulf Governments to amend any new counter-terrorism bill that could harm human rights in the countries, and would be “particularly troubling” as the GCC states are member of the newly constituted UN Human Rights Council. In a letter addressed to the GCC ministries of interiors, Mr. Talal AL-Shamsi, Head of GCC Affairs in GHR, urged GCC authorities to make amendments to any expected bills to bring them in line with international human rights law.
 
GHR welcomes Obama's commitments to close Guantánamo.
GHR has welcomed president Obama’s statement that he will follow through on his commitment to close the detention centre at Bay and ensure that the USA does not use torture. In a letter sent to president Obama, GHR requested him to turn his words into action within the early months of his presidency and demonstrate his commitment to meeting the USA's international obligations, including by signing an executive order prohibiting torture and other ill-treatment, as defined under international law
